Description:

For this hike you will need to be at Black Crater trailhead 44.2848, -121.7658 (about 90 minutes drive from Eugene) ready to hit the trail at 3:45AM.
We will start at 3:45AM and hike to the top of Black Crater for a spectacular sunrise. Sunrise will be at 6:00 AM.

Trip Report

In anticipation of a striking sunrise, it was not difficult to wake up at three-thirty. Equipped with our trusty headlamps, we hit Black Crater trail at four o'clock. The steep trail was littered with hundreds of dead trees from the 2012 Pole Creek fire. Just moments from our start, the blush of the new day came from the east. It's always amazing, no matter how many times you experience the magic of a sunrise in the mountains.
We were rewarded with a light breeze, crisp mountain air, an abundance of wildflowers and a spectacular view from 7,250 feet rocky summit. We agreed that this was the best way to spend our Sunday.
