Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte

Description:

We will start on time at 6:45 am. Please arrive 10 minutes before the start time. This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We'll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn't co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top.

There are 2 ways to get to the trailhead:
1. To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trail head is on your left in about ½ mile. Do not turn left on Southpointe Dr.
2. Another way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

Trip Report

We were a large Tuesday morning hiking group as this was Tommy Young's final hike with us before his move to Florida. Janet brought treats to share while Tommy reflected on his first Obsidian hike with Janet as leader. He almost did not hike that day as it was raining but he thought better of that idea and showed up - late! Janet immediately said as he arrived, "You are the last one...Let's GO!" He has become a friend to many and we are sure glad he lived amongst us for awhile.
We decided to make these Tuesday Blanton hike start times permanent:
Standard time : start time of 7:15am
Daylight saving time: start time of 6:45am - the first Tuesday after daylight saving time (DST) in the spring starts (always a Sunday) through to the Tuesday after it ends (always a Sunday).

In 2025 for example, Sunday 3/9 - Sunday 11/2 are the dates of DST, so Tuesday 3/11 we start at 6:45am and it remains the start time until Tuesday 11/4 at which date the start time is 7:15am.
