Blanton Heights to Spencer Butte

  • Start date: 06/23/2019

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 06/23/2019

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

I'll point out two places where the phantom orchid is blooming. Hiking on the first two sections of the trail will give us the opportunity to see the completed “root wad” repair work from the snow storm. Depending on the weather and the stamina of the group, we may divide into two groups. The hardest part is the uphill on Blanton Heights section when we return to our cars. If anyone would like a shorter trip and want to leave their car at the 52nd and Willamette Trailhead before our departure time , email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net We can figure something out.
To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile.

Another way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

Trip Report

We thank Eugene Parks and Open Space for the new toilets and garbage cans at the trailheads plus all of the gravel and rock work to repair the trail sections damaged by root wads during the snow storm. It was a pleasant four hour hike that included a quick stop to view the phantom orchids, tiger lilies, and the red elderberry. The only unpleasant object was the drone flying above us on Spencer Butte. The hardest part was on the return when we hiked up ten false summits to the Blanton Summit. Three of us verified the number!
