Description:

Hi all! I am looking forward to our small group exploration. The weather will be warm in the afternoon--in the 80's. We will be near the McKenzie, and doing most of our activity before 3 PM.

I plan on bringing an 8 cup container and a 4 cup container which fit into my day pack. The farms will hold our berries if we decide to loop back to pick the harvest up. I will bring freezer baggies in case we need them.

The Plan:
Meet 8:05 AM “G” Station at LTD Downtown Eugene.
Depart LTD Bus # 91 McKenzie River at 8:20 AM
Return 4:30 PM LTD Bus from Leaburg
Arrive at 9 AM U-Pick Blueberries at Organic Redneck Farm. Use a buddy system—price break at 10 pounds. Berry system will last til mid August. Then walk upriver along the Leaburg Canal to the EWEB dam and Fish Hatchery.
11 AM Tour at Leaburg Fish Hatchery. EWEB has been required to lower the water in the Leaburg canal. How has this impacted local fisheries?
After lunch near the Leaburg reservoir and Dam, we will follow the canal levee downriver to Greenwood Drive. We will walk along Greenwood Drive. Here we are closer to the river. We have several choices of what to do. Small Mom and Pop farms have more berries and lavender for sale.

3:30 PM We have a choice to stop at a boat landing or to tour a second Salmon Fish Hatchery to hear about the impact of canal hydrology and spawning salmon. If we tour the Salmon Fish Hatchery, we will catch the bus at the Hatchery at about 4:30. I am bringing bright bicycle vests for safe walking to HWY bus stop. It is really a short distance.

Bring your curiosity and questions about our foods and fish and nearby rural community.

Trip Report

A visit to Organic Redneck Farm is the most pleasant aspect of our exploration. We each pick about 8 pounds of blueberries, and hop off and on the LTD Bus nearby. Here, the river is flat, and the diversion is a working person’s resource. The water in the canal is very low due to unsafe seepage. The Salmon Hatchery on Greenwood Road temporarily relocates its operation to the Leaburg Fish Hatchery. We learn about the fish tanks and observe an osprey. The walk along the canal is accessible and easy. The noise of trucks on the highway dampens my enthusiasm. I welcome your suggestions on how to access quieter hikes along the LTD #91 Route.
