Description:

Broken Top is my favorite mountain. It's the most beautiful of all the hikes/approaches of all the Oregon mountains. It as a super fun ridge to scramble up, then has great exposure and a tiny bit of technical rock work at the top. So much fun.
Broken Top is a long approach, as you can see, 17 miles round trip. You need to be in top, physical shape. We will be moving at a brisk pace to complete it in one day.
If you are concerned about your fitness, there are other Broken Top trips available that take two days, where you camp at the base.
I love doing Broken Top in one day because we get to carry a light pack.
You can choose to camp at the trailhead the evening before, or drive over in the very early morning.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Harness, belay/rappel device, two prussik cords, an autoblock, a personal leash, and a minimum of four locking caribiners. Also a helmet. Plus, food and water for up to a 14 hour day. Clothing and layers for a chilly morning and possible chill at the summit. Light hikers, it's a long hike.

Trip Report

On Saturday July 21, 10 of us summited Broken Top. The trip was lead by Marci Hansen. The trip assistant was Hayden Banks. The weather was perfect. It was chilly at the trailhead at just 32 degrees. The trip participants included mother/son and father/son duos. It was a really great day.
