Description:

This trip starts at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Green Lakes / Fall Creek Trailhead. We will hike about 5 miles to a spring above Green Lakes where we will set up camp. At 6:00 AM Sunday, we’ll hike the climbers trail to the north ridge and then follow the ridge south to the summit. At one spot just below the summit, there is a short section of vertical climbing where you will follow a fixed rope with prusiks, followed by an unroped, exposed catwalk and final 20 feet of scrambling. Descent will include a short 12-foot rappel to get us back on the north ridge. Once back at the spring, we’ll break down camp and hike out on the Green Lakes trail. Carpooling information will be distributed within a week before the climb.

Trip Report

We drove to the Green Lakes trailhead on Saturday afternoon. The parking lot was full and cars were parked on both sides of the Cascade Lakes Highway for about a 200-yard stretch. Our team rode in two vehicles and we lucked out by waiting in the parking lot for hikers to come back to the trailhead and drive off, leaving a couple of vacant spots. We hiked along Fall Creek for about 3.6 miles and then headed northwest cross-country for another 1.5 miles to reach our camping spot at the springs and headwaters of a small creek. There was daylight by the time we started our climb on Sunday morning. A couple of hours trudging up the climber’ trail and north ridge got us to the rope-up spot. After a short climb up a 12-foot wall and negotiating the catwalk, everyone was on the summit. We were a 1,000 feet above a sea of clouds that covered everything except the tops of Mt. Bachelor, Mt, Thielsen, and Diamond Peak to the south. There was a cold wind at the summit, so we did not stay long. A quick descent down the ridge got us back to our camp before noon. We rested for a while and some climbers soaked their feet in the steam next to camp, then we packed up and hiked out to the trailhead.
