Trip Report

Left Eugene on Saturday morning in clear sunshine. Arrived at Sparks Lake shortly before noon. Hike into Green Lakes area was very warm. Despite the time of year there was still a lot of snow on the ground from 3 miles and beyond. Green Lakes were still mostly frozen over. Set up camp by mid-afternoon. George arrived at camp at 7:30 after leading a hike up Black Crater. Spent much of the evening shooting down squadrons of zeppelin-sized-mosquitoes which descended upon us. Also descending were thunder clouds and we were treated to a lightning and thunder display that night.

But dawn broke clear the next day, and we tripped off at 6:45 a.m. Reached the ridge saddle, 8,000 ft., and sunshine by 7:30. Proceeded steadily up the ridge, and everyone was on top by 9:20. Had a great, but slightly hazy, view from Hood down to Thielsen. Started down at 10:00 a.m. Skidded down the scree slopes to the snow where George and Eve did a great exhibition of standing glissading down steep snow at Mach III. Back in camp by noon. Left for the trailhead by 1:00 p.m. in bright sunshine. A fine weekend with an even finer group of people.

Climbers included Eve Lonnquist, George Jobanek, Ralph Hatleberg on his first 0bsidian climb, Don Peccia on his first climb ever, and leader, Ray Davis.
