Trip Report

Broken Top can be done in one long day, but our group planned to do it in two. We left Eugene at 8:00 am and drove to the Green Lakes Trailhead. It was quite a scene at the trailhead, but we managed to find the last two parking spaces. There was even a bus load of climbers. We hurried past the crowds, and had a pleasant hike to our camping area, approximately 300 feet above Green Lakes. It’s a perfect spot to relax: an open field, great views, no other campers, and a spring. It sprinkled during the night, but nothing serious. We left camp around 7:00 am and reached the summit in 2.5 hours. We used a fixed line on the fifth-class pitch. We were back at the cars around 2:30 pm. Although it was mostly cloudy the whole weekend, we welcomed the cool temperatures. The ranger said is was “the nicest weekend all summer.”

Climbers were: Lee Schaffner, Judy Smith, Larry Smith, John Pegg (assistant leader) and Deb Carver (leader).
