Trip Report

The small size of our group allowed us to expand this Broken Top climb to include South Sister as well. We left Eugene mid-morning on Friday and drove to the Fall Creek trailhead on Century Drive. Our, hike into Green Lakes was slowed a bit by a driving rain storm, but we made it to the Lake by 5 p.m. and set up camp with all the other folks enjoying Green Lakes.

Saturday morning we delayed our start of Broken Top because of high winds. As we climbed the west ridge of Broken Top and the sun came up, the day became beautiful with not a cloud in the sky. We were on top at about 11 a.m., had a nice lunch and a beautiful view. After quick trip down the scree slope we were back at Green Lakes about 2:30 p.m. It was nice to spend a relaxing afternoon and evening..

Sunday morning we left Green Lakes about 6 a.m., under a beautiful sky, for South Sister. We crossed a log bridge at the outlet of Green Lakes and headed up the normal route. There was lots of snow on the route below Lewis Glacier. It was here we ran into a mega-party of Mazamas (17) inching their way to the top. By about 10:30 we were on top (ahead of-the crowd) and had lunch. It was a beautiful view, but cold and windy. On the way down we came to appreciate our early departure in that we avoided most of the 75 people with which we shared the mountain. Double mountain climbers were Dave Blackley, Dan Bretheim, Janet Baker Jacobsen, and leader John Jacobsen.
