Outing Committee Annual Report 1981
Camp Emeline
The 52nd annual Obsidian Summer Camp was held at Todd Lake campground near Broken Top Mountain during the week of 1–8 August 1981. The Forest Service belatedly gave us our permit to camp there only one week before the start of camp and this time they wouldn’t let us drive in the three committee vehicles to unload camp equipment either. This necessitated our using the camp carts to carry in every item of equipment, including the stove and refrigerator the half-mile up hill. We even made two canoe load trips. So this year, it took the committee almost two days to set up instead of the usual one. The camp committee was composed of Kevin and Steven McManigal, Rose Marie and Dick Moffitt and their son Bob.

Trips were made to Bare Lake, Ball Butte, Tam McArthur Rim, Ditch Creek to Green Lakes, Fall Creek to Moraine Lake, Mt. Bachelor and two climbs of Broken Top. One of the Broken Top climbs was by way of Crook Glacier, then straight up the south ridge face. Others indulged in search of flowers at the west end of the lake and some just leisurely canoed around.

This year the camp revived the President’s Tea. Emmy Dale was the most gracious President and received many wonderful and some unusual gifts. She was also presented a captive “Big Foot” suspect that had been lurking around the campfire every night.

The weather was beautiful all week long, however, slightly cool and windy the first couple of days. It got progressively warmer throughout the week and those who helped in carting out the camp gear on Saturday really sweltered. We returned to the Eugene area record breaking heat wave of 108°F.

As usual we had the most delicious camp food and were again treated to lemon meringue pie for dessert by our camp cook Selma Vangsnes.

This year’s camp was just the right size with 42 people attending. All this at the most perfect location I know, Todd Lake.
