Trip Report
There was an especially good attendance Friday, May 21, at the Summer Camp Rally Dessert Meeting at the Lodge; this year's campers-to-be were there and others who had enjoyed many past camps. The new Summer Camp Memorial Bulletin Board was brought out by Wes Prouty, its builder, and displayed to the audience. Princess President Elsie Dotson presented a beautiful dedication of this Memorial, which was sponsored by the Princesses after receiving a Memorial donation from Doris and Frank Jones of Longview, Washington, former members. The idea for a permanent Summer Camp Bulletin Board was first presented by Blanche Bailey, Princess Singing Waters. It was designed by Bea Fontana and constructed by Wes Prouty. It is 40 inches by 56 inches, with a hinge in the center so that it may be closed for easy transport; the wood is pine, with a satiny beige finish. "OBSIDIANS" and the club EMBLEM stand out at the top, with "CAMP THAXTON" on a removable section, and soft board below. The bottom half shows a hand carved pine tree (Thelma's emblem) and the words "IN MEMORY OF PRINCESS PINE TREE." The Princesses will add a small plaque with Thelma's name and dates. In dedication, Elsie expressed the warm memories we all have of Thelma and her special love of the summer outings and all Obsidian activities. She asked the Princesses present to stand, and expressed appreciation to Doris and Frank Jones for their generous donation. Obsidian President Gene Thaxton also added a few words about the Memorial and Thelma.
A short skit was presented with Frank Moore appearing with a huge pack loaded with various unusual items which would be of doubtful use in a summer camp. But the audience applauded Frank's humorous explanations.
The slide show on the Ruby Mountains of Nevada was excellent, by Al Niems and Lloyd Plaisted, Camp Chairman for the outing July 25 to August 1. There were scenes of jewel-like mountains, lakes, meadows, rocks, streams, etc., enough to please the most eager campers.
Selma Vangsnes, Camp Cook for more than fifteen years, was given a heartfelt welcome.
Needless to say, the desserts were fabulous - an old Obsidian tradition - presided over by Wilma Moore in the kitchen.
