Trip Report

The focus of this trip was to boat approximately 5 miles from Charleston to the South Slough Interpretive Center. Since the trip started at 9AM, we met at Sunset Bay State Park the day before and hiked from there to Shore Acres, also about 5 miles round trip. Thanks to the Skardas, we were very fortunate to be joined by 2 local residents who shared "secret" viewpoints and stories about the Simpson property. Accommodations were at Captain John's motel and an airbnb house. Dinner was delicious with lively conversations at the Shark Bites restaurant in Coos Bay. The next day was cool, crisp, and clear! Since its founding as the nation’s first National Estuarine Research Reserve, the South Slough Reserve has been a leader in improving the stewardship and understanding of Pacific Northwest estuaries and coastal watersheds. It is managed through a partnership between NOAA and Oregon Department of State Lands. Our leader, Eric Dean, was quite knowledgeable and safety conscious, the north wind was minimal, and we saw several harbor seals, eagles, egrets, blue herons, and osprey. Four persons rented their sit-upon kayaks and the rest brought their own boats. Afterwards most of us visited the Interpretive Center and then headed home. It was a fabulous trip!
