Description:

This is a done in conjunction with another hike. The other hike will be counting on us for transportation. We'll drop the other hikers at the PCT trailhead at the Santiam Pass. Then we head on to Jack Lake. The Jack Lake Trailhead is the entrance into the popular Canyon Creek Meadows and Wasco Lake area. We'll have time to explore the Meadows and Wasco while we wait for the other group to descend from the PCT. We should bring binoculars. We might be able to watch the other hikers near the north ridge of Three-Fingered Jack.
***This hike needs drivers. We need to support the other group; for them to be able to have a full wilderness group of 12 we need 4 drivers that can take three each. If we get at least four drivers then we can see about taking more for our hike.

Trip Report

After leaving 12 hikers at Santiam Pass for their longer hike, our group was on the trail at Jack Lake by 10:00. I was a little worried about how crowded the trail would be after seeing the number of cars parked at the trailhead and down the road. I needn't have worried, though, as it was not overly crowded as we made our way to Canyon Creek Upper Meadow. We had plenty of time for taking pictures, enjoying a leisurely lunch, and spotting the other Obsidian hikers taking their lunch break up on the ridgeline. We watched as they started back down the trail and then we went back through the meadows to continue our loop. We made a side trip toward Wasco Lake with some members going all the way down to the lake for a dip. All eight of us were back to Jack Lake by 4:00. We considered this a successful outing as we saw a spectacular display of wildflowers and had a good hike despite it being longer than advertised. Some of our group even experienced three goat sightings---two mountain goats on a ledge as we were returning from the Upper Meadow, four pack goats with a backpacking couple and their son, and as someone who shall remain nameless put it, “12 old goats up on the ridgeline!”
