Description:

***Weather Alert*** (Saturday PM) The trip is on. Darien drove to the coast and had no issues.

Note the departure time, which reflects a shorter drive. Cape Mountain is a close in hike on the east side of US 101. It has lush Sitka spruce and Douglas firs and many shades of green. The hike is listed as 8 miles, but 10-11 might be nice if it is not raining heavily. The area past Scurvy Ridge that has a loop, has decent views of the ocean, and it would be nice this year to get to the summit, even if it is overgrown.

It is likely to be wet, which is great, because I need to test my rain gear under extreme conditions. Wet weather builds character.

This hike lends itself to a stop on the way back in Mapleton or Florence, should people wish.

Trip Report

We escaped the icebox that had been Eugene for four days, leaving freezing trees behind at Cougar pass and meeting birthday boy Darian and his wife at the Dry Lake Trailhead. We again took the Princess Tasha Trail (all named from horses, that information from Daphne), then Scurvy Ridge (which might be a horse's name, but I doubt it), then Lonesome Lane. I was not where I wanted to be, but told the group we were going to take a connector trail which would put us (I hoped) on the trail we wanted. Ah, to have some trail memory after nearly three years. We were on the proper trail and ended up at the Loop where there was a bench and a nice place for lunch. The woods were sunny where there were openings, cold, with some snow at the 1000 foot level. We came back mostly the way we went out. Again, Cape Mountain eluded me, but next year, I think I will make that part of the loops. I managed to get everybody back safely without their knowing at one point I wasn't sure where we were, but the direction was right, and we were making really good time!!
