From there, we will hike on the Cardwell Hill Trail along the Marys River and then northeast into Fitton Green Natural Area with minimal elevation gain. Then we turn south onto the Fitton Green North-South Trail and climb up to the Allen Thoop Loop for views of the Willamette Valley and Marys Peak. Afterwards we head back on the North-South Trail and turn west on Amy’s Trail (which follows a creek) then explore the Crestmont Land Trust on one of several trails. The final stint is northwest on Cardwell Hill Trail back to the parking lot. Most of this hike is on gravel roads but one dates back to the 1850’s.

Trip Report

Eugene’s drizzly morning did not discouraged Obsidians to drive north. By time we had reached trailhead, rain stopped.
We started our 40°F hike at the top of Cardwell Hill Drive.
Large portion of the hike was on well maintained, wide roads along the Marys River and smaller tributaries.
On the way to Fitton Green we saw several large bear footprints right on the muddy trail.
From the top of the hill we enjoyed view to Philomath area, nestled in the patchy fog.
After the short lunch break along Marys River, we hiked maze of the trails guided by great assistant leader.
After the hike our cheerful group stopped for refreshment at nearby Cardwell Hill Cellars.
