Trip Report

Despite the hot and dusty trail conditions, our group had a fantastic backpack trip. Carl Lake is beautiful, and we found plenty of good campsites to choose from. Evenings and mornings were spent exploring the lakeshore for frogs, newts and deer, as well as beautiful sunrises. On our layover day we hiked north to Table Lake. Along this trail we passed numerous amazing volcanic features, small meadows & tarns, Betty Lake, and lots of huckleberries!! After lunch at Table Lake, three brave souls ascended The Table while the others swam or just relaxed by the lake. Those who hiked The Table agreed afterwards it wasn't worth the effort due to the very-real risks of falling or at least twisting an ankle--the plateau before dropping to Betty Lake actually offers the best views of Mt. Jeff.
Our first evening at camp we witnessed what we can only describe as a UFO in the upper northern sky. None of us have ever seen anything like it...
Cold drinks and (real) food at Takoda's on our way home were a great finish to this wonderful trip!
