Trip Report

The news that Carpenter Mountain Lookout in the Blue River Ranger District was to be restored (and retained as an emergency Fire Lookout and recreational facility) was welcome indeed … Its condition has deteriorated over the past several years in spite of previous Obsidian attempts to prolong its life. Four Obsidians volunteered their time to help the project and on Sunday, with much scratching, scraping and dislodging of loose and flaking layers of old paint, rendered the exterior fit and ready for a new paint job. Hordes of flying ants (?) in the exposed roof structure did their best to stop the work. Forest Service personnel will now renew some of the rotting timbers, refurbish loose windows and the door, and replace the missing lightning conductor, making the building better able to withstand winter's ravages, after which volunteers will again be need to paint the whole.

Dave's knowledge of the area's back roads led us home via and very close to the imposing Wolf Rock, and down, down, down steep Deer Creek Road to Highway 126. Carpenter Mountain paint scrapers were (with ideal weather conditions throughout) Tom Cawi, Bob Foster, Dave Predeek and leader John Cecil.
