Trip Report

This is the fifth consecutive year that Obsidians have done trail maintenance work on the Castle Rock trail on the McKenzie Ranger District. The weather this time was by far the best. We raked debris off the trail and trimmed brush. We enjoyed the vista of the McKenzie Valley at lunch time on the summit. Yellow lomatium, manzanita, red flowering currant, phlox and trillium were in bloom. One of my favorite areas is on the lower part of the trail near the King Road parking area. Here are two of the most enormous trees - a Douglas fir and an incense cedar - that are surely among the largest of their species on the McKenzie Valley floor. If you haven't stopped in at the McKenzie Ranger Station lately, you should do so. At the front entrance is a new, very large foyer of log construction, well-designed and esthetically pleasing. On display is a fine relief map of the District, including the Three Sisters area. Trail crew members were Yuan Hopkins, Helen Liguori, Larry Myers and leader Dave Predeek.
