Trip Report

Our first effort this year at trail maintenance got off to a good start with the Kings-Castle Trail. At McKenzie Ranger Station we met Steve Otoupalik, who transported our tools to the upper Castle Rock trailhead. We cleaned trail debris to the summit of Castle Rock, where we briefly enjoyed the view. A few spring flowers, such as lomatium and manzanita were blooming. Clouds obscured the view of higher peaks and ridges but the sun was shining brightly on us. Fresh snow covered the trees not far up-slope. From here we hiked down Kings-Castle Trail, raking and clipping as we went. At lunch time the clouds lifted and we glimpsed the Three Sisters. We had a drawing for an Obsidian T-shirt, which appropriately, Margaret Wiese won. This is one of her favorite trails, and she and a friend have been clearing it for years. At lower elevation we passed through old-growth forests with massive trees. It took us a while to repair the damage where a large tree had fallen, covering the trail with a pile of limbs and debris. Thanks are due to Steve Otoupalik of the U.S. Forest Service who made arrangements for our trail work, which he participated in. Our Obsidian trail crew members were Max Brown, Janet Hall, Bob Moffitt, Margaret Wiese and leader Dave Predeek.
