Trip Report

Entertainments Chair Mary Bentsen first fittingly asked for a moment of silent communion in respect of the tragic event at Thurston High. Author Bill Sullivan then asked that we try to lose ourselves for the rest of the evening in contemplation of nature’s bounty to be found in the Central Oregon Cascades. Bill’s slide show and talk, characterized by his usual keen observation and humor, succeeded admirably in making that possible.

Bill has searched out a large number of new trails that have appeared in the last seven years since the first edition of his book, "100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades". It is not feasible to attempt to describe them in this brief account. Suffice it to say that there is something for everyone - including a new list of 20 all-accessible trails for the physically handicapped.

Enticements such as grand vistas, caves, petroglyphs, falls, lookout stations and wild flowers are to be found. More trails have been added that are suitable for children and for winter hiking or backpacking.

It should be noted that the Eugene Weekly (which may not be everybody’s cup of tea!) occasionally carries excerpts from the book. - Bep Fontana
