Description:
Come see where Oregon became American. Champoeg State Park preserves the location of the 1843 vote where French Canadians, loyal to the Hudson Bay Company, and American settlers agreed in a very close vote to seek provisional government from the United States. Champoeg became a small village in a desirable agriculture area. Unfortunately in 1861 a still record flood washed most buildings down the river. The Robert Newell house, higher on the hill, survived and we will do a tour of the Pioneer Village. This complex is maintained by the DAR and gives a good picture of early settlement. The Newell house, built in 1852 is decorated in the 1860’s style. It is lovingly filled with furnishings donated by Oregon pioneer families. The second floor has an outstanding exhibit of the gowns worn by wives of Oregon governors. We will have lunch here, BRING YOUR OWN, in a lovely room overlooking the Champoeg area. Also on our tour in the complex is the pioneer mother’s cabin, the Butteville Academy, a one room school of the 1860’s and the 1840’s Butteville jail. Time permitting; we will visit the nearby Oregon State Park (Champoeg) Visitor Center, a jewel in itself. Remember to bring a sack lunch.
