Trip Report

Our jolly group of 35 left VRC at 3:30 p.m., driving down the I-5 Freeway to Roseburg. We lucked out on the weather, which was mild and the sun out part of the time and no rain. At Roseburg we found Casey’s Restaurant off Garden Valley Exit where we all gathered in a private room and had dinner. We were a noisy, happy group and dinner was included in the trip. We left around 6:00 for Wildlife Safari outside of Winston. We had no trouble as the route was well marked and our driver found the way even though it was very dark. A guide met us and led us to the train station. Everywhere there were Christmas lights, some depicting animals. The train ride was short but fun and takes passengers around the park. There was hot chocolate available after the ride (free), and some hurried to get on the covered wagon going up the hill to see the rhinos and a view of the lights. Alas, the rhinos had already gone to sleep but there were other animals. We left around 7:30 and returned to River Forks Park in Roseburg to see the Fantasy of Lights sponsored by the Rotary Club. Very large wooden soldiers with red, white and blue lights greeted us at the gate with an archway full of lights. Driving through the display was a magical experience. There were large and small displays, some moving, some going on and off and every Christmas theme imaginable. We drove through twice on the well-marked route. Our capable driver was Gary Toll and thanks to Ray Jensen we had no trouble finding River Forks Park. We had two young grandsons along who added to the Christmas spirit. Goodies were furnished by the leader and Ethel Allen.

Enjoying an early Christmas were Ethel Allen, Betty & Lloyd Bissell, Helen & Marian Borchardt, Mary Bridgeman; Beth Bush, Nicole Chase, Mary Lee Cheadle, Kent Christoferson, Dorral & Rosemary Etter, Elina Girrad, Dora Harris, Margaret Huston, Evelyn Hile, Marcia Jordan, Jean & Ray Jensen, Ben Kirk, Gloria Laydon, Mary, Kay, Andy & Jesse Lemons, Bonnie McKee.
