Trip Report

The weather was beautiful. We picked up John Thomson along Sandy Blvd. in Portland but missed Mildred Weatherby for some reason. Our route followed the old highway by way of Corbett, Chanticlear and Crown Point vistas. We stopped for lunch at the Cascade Locks town park by the old locks and then visited their nice historical museum in the park. We crossed the Bridge of the Gods and stopped at Skaminia Interpretive Center near Stevenson. We stayed on the north side of the river going eastward through Ringen to Dallesport and across the bridge to our motel which was situated a short distance below the Dalles Dam.

The second day also was warm and clear. We could not get to the dam for a self-conducted tour so instead drove to the top of the hill south of The Dalles where we had a beautiful vista of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and the whole valley. The Interpretive Center and the Wasco County Historical Museum (combined under one roof) did not open until 10 o’clock. We spent until 1:00 at the museum but could have spent much more time. We ate a hasty lunch and then started for home by way of the Rowena Loops and the Tom McCall Nature Conservancy lands, which had nice spring flowers. We then continued on the old highway through Mosier and to I-84 and on home. We stopped for a rest stop and refreshments at the Tualatin rest stop but arrived by 5:30 after a very good trip.
