Description:
Cottage Grove recently completed a major overhaul of their historic downtown streets and sidewalks.
We will meet at 9 a.m. at Albertsons on 30th St. in S. Eugene, on the 30th St. side of the parking lot. It is about 25 miles south to Cottage Grove where we will park at the Cottage Grove Community Center and Library, 700 E. Gibbs Avenue.
There are several walking tours with maps and descriptions available at cgchamber.com/self-guided-tours. Mostly they focus on the blocks around downtown and we will noodle around the area, not too quickly.
Those who wish to may plan a restaurant lunch and in the afternoon visit the Bohemia Gold Mining Museum (https://bohemiagoldminingmuseum.com/) which opens at 1 and has a $2 admission fee.
Cottage Grove historical/cultural highlights include:
Buster Keaton's 1927 silent film The General was filmed in Cottage Grove. It is worth watching.
Oregon author Opal Whiteley grew up in Cottage Grove. Wikipedia has a good article on her.
