Trip Report

It was a beautiful spring day when we piled on to Baxter Shaw's Coach (some uninformed people call it a bus) and headed for the Pleasant Hill area to visit some of Lane County's Covered Bridges.

We went to bridges at Jasper, Unity, Lowell and Dexter areas. Then we headed for the Dorena area by way of Cloverdale Road and Sears Road. On the way past Creswell we stopped to admire and take pictures of a residence built like a castle. We proceeded on to Dorena and visited two more bridges before stopping at beautiful Wildwood falls to eat lunch. On the way back by Dorena Lake we stopped to visit the Doll House, a place where some very talented people manufacture porcelain dolls and clothing for them. It was very interesting.

We proceeded on to visit three more bridges in the Cottage Grove area. After that we took the Cottage Grove Lorane Road to visit our last bridge at Coyote Creek near Crow. There we were surprised to find two of Lane County's commissioners, Jerry Rust and Chuck Ivy, and Chuck's wife, waiting to greet us. They were interested in our trip because they are promoting covered bridges as tourist attractions.

From there we went on home and felt like we had all had a pleasant day. Those traveling were members Bernie Claypool, Virginia DeMers, Bill Eaton, Irene Flynn, Jan Gund, Bette Hack, Vera Heidenreich, "Mac" McWilliams, Frances Newsom, Jan Pattison, Lois Person, Bonnie Rickard, Lois Schreiner, Frank and Maryelton Schutz, Grace Smith, Isabell Turnbull, and Virginia West; nonmembers Mildred Dart, Marge Eaton, Minnie Fosket, Evelyn Hile, Virginia Kapsa, Enola Nielson, Delores Pierce, Eileen Pollard, Betty Rayborn, Mildred Weatherby, and Catherine Filmer. Leaders were Jennelle Moorhead and Clair Cooley.
