Coyote Wall {near Bingen, WA}

  • Start date: 11/08/2024

  • Start time: 7:30 AM

Description:

This out & back hike features stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge from the Washington side, and Mt. Hood if it is clear. The primary trail follows the cliff edge of the 300’ high curvy wall up a fairly steep grade heading south. There is a maize of trails with dirt bikes {no motorized} often active and in my experience, always courteous. The weather is forecast to be mostly sunny and 58 that day, and will probably worsen in the ensuing days, so we’ll “strike while the iron is hot”. Bad weather will cancel or change the destination. We’ll stop for coffee & snack at MUGS Coffee in Bingen on the way up.

No special equipment required but prepare to be on the trail about 4.5 hours.

Trip Report

A mild late-autumn day helped make this hike a lovely experience. This remarkable wall, measuring about 300’ high, curves its way for a mile or so up the steep hill on the Washington side of the Columbia River just east of Bingen. The hillside features a maize of trails, one of which is “cliff-edge” and follows the top rim of the wall, offering views of the wall itself as well as many miles of the Columbia River and Mt. Hood. Just two of us enjoyed this spectacular hike.
