Description:

We'll meet in the Lowe's parking lot on W. 11th underneath the big trees and possibly consolidate boats. We will use the Cantrell Road boat ramp to launch into Coyote Creek. We'll paddle up Coyote Creek as far as we can go, and then turn around and paddle into Fern Ridge Lake, perhaps landing on Gibson Island. In addition to enjoying the water, we will be looking for birds, turtles, raccoons, etc. Be sure to bring your binoculars. We should be off the water by 12:30ish. Note: unless we land on the island, there is no opportunity for a pit stop; you may want to limit your liquid intake accordingly.

Trip Report

It was cool, but sunny - perfect paddling weather! We started by paddling upstream on Coyote Creek, but unfortunately, due to a downed tree, were only able to go for approximately 15 minutes. Hopefully, one of these days, someone will bring a chain saw and cut part of it - there is a significant amount of delightful water beyond it! The water level was the highest I have ever seen; we really had to bend over to get underneath the railroad bridge. We didn't see any mammals, but enjoyed admiring an immature bald eagle, purple martins, swallows, egrets, grebes, great blue herons, and a few songbirds.
