Description:

This is a difficult hike that was rescheduled due to snow at both the Maude Creek area and at higher elevations. With luck, the Detroit area trail crew will have removed some blowdowns. The first mile and a half to the Creek is slightly downhill and easy. After the creek crossing, the trail starts to climb significantly and steeply to the meadow, and then switchbacks up the meadow, before taking a long, relatively level path. Finally, the trail gets in the trees and climbs some more to the summit. It is likely to be hot, since the trip was moved back, and water is important. On a clear day, there are great views of Mt. Washington-Broken Top, along with North, South and Echo Peaks to the west.

Trip Report

Eight of us hiked up Crescent Mountain and enjoyed the views on top, lunch up high, on a delightfully nice but not hot clear day. All of the Cascades from Mt. Adams to Diamond Peak were visible. There was one large drift of snow near the top but no other snow visible, a far cry from a month ago, when on my scouting hike, I was turned around by snow. Wildflowers were in abundance--Cascade penstemon, Lupine, mustard, Solomon's seal star flower, false Solomon's seal, paint brush, columbine, phlox, and many more! We had two non-members who took in the joys of a hard hike upward followed by lunch and a quick descent!
