Trip Report

Despite the VERY HOT temperatures we had an enjoyable hike to the summit of Crescent Mt. (temperatures driving home ranged from 98 - 101). The flowers were a little past their prime in the meadows, but still colorful. We had great views from the summit including Crescent Lake, Mts. Hood & Adams, and every peak from Mt. Jefferson to Diamond Peak.
We encountered a group of forestry workers in the meadows working on a very interesting project. They were working to create a more natural/positive effect from fires. By "ringing" the trees (removing a circle of bark several feet off the ground down to the cambria) the lower tree and meadow plants burn, but the upper tree is left to provide valuable habitat for animals and birds.
