Description:

This pleasant hike through a pastoral setting west of Corvallis connects Benton County’s Fitton Green Natural Area with a wooded parcel owned by the Crestmont Land Trust, a private nonprofit whose mission ranges from conservation and habitat restoration to environmental education and outdoor recreation. We’ll amble past  the Mary’s River, take our time to read the interesting interpretative signs, and eat lunch with a fine view of the foothills of the Coast Range and Willamette Valley. Following lunch we will descend to the Bald Hill Natural Area adjoining Corvallis.

NOTE. This hike requires a short car shuttle. The outing will only occur if there are sufficient drivers to transport 10 hikers. Please volunteer to drive if you can.

Trip Report

Our hike this fine day explored a network of land trusts and trails near Corvallis. Starting at the trailhead for the Crestmont Land Trust, we walked through the Fitton Green Natural Area (Benton County property), and the Bald Hill Farm (Greenbelt Land Trust) and ended at the Bald Hill Natural Area (owned by the City of Corvallis).

This beautiful forest trail has it all- - a river, a diverse forest, and wonderful views of the Willamette Valley and Coast Range. The route is a collaboration involving many individuals and groups. It illustrates how public and private interests have worked together to create a community resource that allows visitors to walk as far as the Oregon State University campus to the Marys River near Wren.
