Trip Report

The Obsidians and Eugene Mountain Rescue are jointly sponsoring a Crevasse Rescue class to be held June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Obsidian Lodge (classroom session) and the weekend of June 26-27 (field session). The emphasis for the class is on the techniques for a climbing party to use for self-rescue if one of their party should fall into a crevasse. The classroom session will cover some of the basics of roped travel in crevassed areas and how to avoid getting into hazardous situations. The field trip will be at Mount Hood, and will include use of prusiks for self-rescue, anchors and belays in snow, and basic rescue techniques using pulley systems for mechanical advantage. We will travel onto a crevassed glacier, lower people into a crevasse and pull them out.

Class enrollment is limited. Contact Sue Sullivan if you have questions or if you wish to sign up. <img border="2" src="images/Crevasse.jpeg" width="576" height="432">
