Description:

This is the longest hike in the Cape Perpetua area. We will take the trail clockwise, having lunch at the one overlook to the south and the southwest, unless it is really blowing rain. We descend and return by the OCT. Most of the elevation gain is in the first 2 miles, and from there on it is not difficult. It is likely to be wet, so dress accordingly. The pace will be moderately brisk (2.5 mph average and the descent will speed things up), since we won’t be on the trail much before 10 and sunset is before 5. Toilets at the Trailhead. High Tide:0839 (+8); Low Tide:1537 (minus).
***Weather***(update Thursday PM) Models show a moderately wet day on the coast and likely more than Lane County. This means precipitation but not an atmospheric river type of event. Be prepared for a wet hike. Remember, rain builds character. Note: a ton of rain is not very much. Indeed, it is less than 0.001 inch--on a single acre.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: 10 essentials. Good rain gear is a must. I plan on doing this if it is raining. Gaiters are nice in case areas of the trail are overgrown (doubt) or running water in streams (very strong possibility on the downhill side of the hike). Poles are probably optional. Please bring plastic bags for wet gear and either dry shoes or some bag for wet feet in cars. It may be milder at the coast, but bring two pair of gloves unless they are waterproof and warm. Many on the Marys Peak hike, admittedly colder, had wet and cold hands.

Trip Report

Nine of us, including Rachelle Masin from Yachats, hiked the Cummins Creek trail out of Cape Perpetua (Cooks Ridge). We met Rachelle last year, who trail runs it often. The group picture in the parking lot was quickly rained out, so we took it at the trailhead. The trail climbs about 1000' to the Gwynn Creek junction; we kept going to near the FS road, turning south and reaching our highest point (sufficient to get hailed upon). After a brief lunch, where the choice was possible sun and wind or no sun and no wind, we went downhill, passing a lot of waterfalls, many nice streams, and learned about another trail that is a cutoff. I want to take that next time. We reached the Oregon Coast Trail, and despite low tide, the surf was definitely impressive and the sunlight on the water beautiful. Good hike. For the first time since I've lived in Oregon, I had my wipers on full, as we drove through a torrential downpour near Mapleton. Wow.
