Trip Report

Leaving a cloud covered valley to find sun in the mountains is a source of joy. Vine maple and big leaf maple provided brilliant color among the conifers. Mushrooms were erupting everywhere. This hike began with views of Salt Creek Falls cascading 286 feet down into the canyon. The trail parallels Salt Creek upstream, then crosses on a sturdy wood bridge to continue to the Diamond Creek Falls loop. Viewpoints allow glimpses into the Salt Creek canyon and across to the highway 58 tunnel. We meandered past Too Much Bear Lake above the cliffs of the canyon, turning left to follow Diamond Creek upstream. The side trail to the stream below Diamond Creek Falls is worth the hike down and back. A new bridge at the bottom took us to the base of the falls, which was spectacular. Continuing on, the group enjoyed lunch at the viewpoint and continued on the loop back to the parking lot. Time spent outdoors gave the 4 a day to remember.
