Trip Report

After discussing the weather forecast with John Fischer, I decided to cancel the camp Friday night. We would meet early Saturday morning. It rained hard Friday night but by Saturday morning the clouds were breaking up and it looked promising. We met at Oakridge Ranger Station at 6 a.m. and drove to the trailhead. We started up the trail by 7:15 and hit snow within the first ¾ mile. The snow was fairly soft and we broke thru in many places. As we "postholed" up hill, Bill's X-C skis sure looked nice. After gaining timberline the snow hardened up and we had nice going. The ridge was very windy with good ice build up on the exposed trees and rocks. We were on the summit by 12:30 p.m. and had a nice lunch break. We recruited two climber/skiers on top. (Received an application for membership as a result.)

John and Dave skied off the summit while Ruby and Bill went lower on the ridge before schussing down. The rest of us had a nice glissade down to timberline. Very warm walk out with a lot of "postholing". Nice climb!

A one day trip like this was made possible due to the excellent system of logging roads on the National Forest. If all lands were "locked up" in roadless areas these kinds of experiences would be available to only an elite few who have time to spend days hiking in. Multiple use does work!!!
