Trip Report

Met South Eugene parking lot at 7 a.m. Left about 7:30 and met outside cafe on Highway 58 at Crescent Lake Junction. Drove to Summit Lake and Trailhead #44, Crale Butte Trail.

Left trailhead at 9:30 a.m. Hiked to Diamond Peak Wild Area boundary along old jeep road probably bullt by Jack Meissner to his cabin once located near Marie Lake. No trace of it today. Left main trail and new Pacific Crest Trail near boundary and hiked to Rockpile and Marie Lakes at south base of Diamond Peak.

Mosquitoes prevented a lunch stop at the lakes. Started climb from South Ridge and stopped at Timberline (out of mosquitoes) for lunch. Group arrived at summit between 1 and 2 p.m. Started down between 2:30 and 3:30. Delayed 20 minutes or so by missing Marie Lake on descent. New climber Henrietta Richmond set a compass course and put us back on the trail and out to cars by 6:30 p.m. Returned to Eugene by 8:30 p.m.

(Recommend this Marie Lake Route as a good one-day climb from Eugene. Because of mosquitoes, camping isn't too desirable at Summit Lake)

Climbers: Chuck Haddad, Lee Hatch, Wayne Hatch, Henrietta Richmond, Robert Walden, and leader Charlotte Mills.
