Trip Report

Recommended essentials for this trip had included mosquito-proof, drab-colored clothing and a heavy dose of repellant. After an early 5:15 a.m. start for the two Eugeneans with a 6 a.m. Oakridge meeting point, we left the Summit Lake Trailhead shortly after 7:00, breaking trail through swarming mosquitoes hunting for breakfast. This encouraged a moderate pace until timberline, where we expected a breeze and disappearance of bloodthirsty insects. Wrong! Passing through the boulder field stirred up lazy mosquitoes from underneath. But soon we left these behind and patches of snow were reached. Long-distance views were outstanding, and we summitted around noon. Descending the mile-long snow-covered ridge, we encountered another group who turned out to be Obsidians also. The trail back was longer than in, and rest stops had to be avoided due to the ever-present mosquitoes. But reaching the trailhead around 3:30 p.m. allowed us to avoid the dusk-time feeding frenzy! An enjoyable climb for all three participants: Lisa Haws, John Pegg (assistant leader) and Ruby Seitz (leader).
