Trip Report

After last weekend's onslaught of spring storms, this climb was rescheduled for one day of the May 25-26 weekend. Sunday was chosen due to local weather forecast predictions. Group size continued to decline, leaving only the leader and assistant leader, but we decided to be conservative if weather moved in and opted to go! Conditions were excellent with clouds burned off as we left Pioneer Gulch, heading for the Southwest Ridge. There appeared to be more snow on top than in early May, and it was fairly calm with outstanding views to the south and broken visibility to the north. A lot of avalanche activity had occurred on all sides of the mountain, with huge sheer points. Corn snow skiing down the Southwest Ridge was thrilling, and plenty of skiable snow was in the trees to within 30-45 minutes of the road. Diamond Peak had the best conditions I've encountered there: no mosquitoes, little postholing uphill, mostly clear skies and great skiing! Contact leader for a potential Diamond Peak north ski bowl exploration in July!! Climbers were Chris Steele and (leader) Ruby Seitz.
