Trip Report

Blue sky and warm spring weather contributed to a delightful climb of Diamond Peak. A group of 12 climbers (including five nonmembers) traveled over firm granular snow to the summit in a little over four hours. We began in Pioneer Gulch and proceeded up through an area of dense, fallen timber to the southwest ridge, which we followed all the way to the south peak. Then we traversed the cornice crested saddle to the summit where we found several climbers with skis and a large German Shepherd named "Tucker". The view was great. Mt. Thielsen and the Three Sisters were prominent and Mt. Jefferson loomed in the hazy distance. The temperature was 60° F and a light wind was blowing from the east. After passing out well-earned summit certificates, we descended by the same route we came up. Chris Shuraleff, Bill Disher and Melinda had a great time glissading. Many thanks to John ("Iron Man") Pegg for being assistant leader and bringing up the rear on the way up. Thanks also to Brian Hoyland for stopping to group us up before our descent through the trees and for his expert navigation to our cars. Beware of deep tree wells in the snow, leader was sucked into one as if it were a black hole! All in all, a great climb with a delightful group of people consisting of Deb Carver, Jolene Cox, Mona Deprey, Bill Disher, Don Gordon, Brian Hoyland, Richard Lemon, Chris Miller, John Pegg, Chris Shuraleff and Melinda & (climb leader) Karl Kriegh.
