Trip Report

Rain forced us to reschedule this trip from May 31, and thankfully June 14 brought us much better weather. Our small group of five climbed the Pioneer Gulch trail and then walked cross-country to 8,744-ft. Diamond Peak’s Southwest Ridge. We found deep, firm snow just above the Diamond Peak trail junction. Snow conditions were good for climbing and we climbed quickly to the Summit Ridge. Lunch and a treat of fresh strawberries was served on the summit under sunny skies and warm temperatures. Our view stretched from Mt. Thielsen to Mt. Jefferson, but we saw no other climbers that day. Bill Disher carried his downhill skis and boots, and was rewarded for his efforts with a glorious run of linked turns down the west side bowl from the summit. The rest of our group descended the Southwest Ridge with plunge steps and glissades. Bill joined us near the trail for the hike, back to the cars. This was a wonderful day in the mountains for a strong and confident group of climbers consisting of Bill Disher, Debbey Loos, Doug Quirk, Chris Shuraleff and Brian Hoyland (leader).
