Trip Report

We started at the Summit Lake trailhead at about 9 a.m. under clear, sunny skies and warm temperatures. At about 10:45 we left the Pacific Crest Trail and headed up the steep scree and talus-ridden eastern flank of the southeast ridge. It was slow going. We finally hit the S.E. ridge and continued up to the false summit where we met two climbers on their way down from the summit. We did some light rock scrambling and made it to the summit at around 1:30 p.m. All morning the sky had steadily increased in haziness from the nearby forest fire east of Oakridge. The view from the top was still worth the trek, as Karen and Jane bagged their first "climb" peak. After 45 minutes for pictures, lunch and a rest we headed down, appreciating the scree more so than coming up, but still cussing the talus. After trekking through the woods on the return trail that never ends we arrived at the trailhead again at about 5:30. Summiting were Mel Zavodsky, Don Gilman, and Obsidians Jane Engert, Karen Myers, Peggy Mathes and Dick Snyder (leader). Climbing but not summiting was Kathy Snyder.
