Trip Report

Folks making the August 7 climb of Diamond Peak met at the parking lot at Blue Lake Trail at 7:00 p.m. Saturday and strolled leisurely to the lake one mile away. After a good night's sleep, which was occasionally interrupted by deer running up and down the hard-packed trail, we arose for an early climb. To escape heat and thunder storms, we started at 5:00 a.m. and hiked through early morning fog and mist until about 9:00 when the sun drove the moisture away.

The climb was slow, picking our way far above the receding snowfield. It seemed strange to see the snow so far below us and hear the heather crackle under our feet. The drought was obvious most of the day. The summit was reached at 10:15 a.m. and we spent only 30 minutes there as the sun kept hiding. The view was one of cloud and haze with other peaks showing slightly. The descent was slow because it was the same rock picking going down as up! No snow or scree to speed our descent. No rain either; although we heard thunder, and the streets of Oakridge were soaked when we drove thru later.

The five climbers agreed it was a good day's exercise and an enjoyable outing. Picking their ways from rock to rock were David and Peter Lewinsohn, Connie and Millard Thomas and leader Phyllis Ford.
