Trip Report

How does that old adage go... "It's better to be lucky than good". Well,we sure lucked out on the weather on Diamond Peak on May 6. Five of us left Eugene intending to do Corrigan Ridge to the summit, but found our way to the trailhead blocked by a large log in the road. After a brief debate, we decided to do the Pioneer Ridge route instead. We stared up the trail at 7:40 AM. There was no snow for the first part of the trail through the woods, then a well-established boot track that led up to the flat area below the ridge. From there things seemed to go quickly, as we kicked steps up the ridge. John Mowat decided to stop and enjoy the view on the ridge at around 7800 ft, and the rest of us continued on, stopping for a brief snack on the false summit before continuing on to the top. We summitted a little after 1:00. There was no wind, and views aplenty on top, and we enjoyed watching a number of skiers head down the bowl. We were back at the car around 4:30.
