Diamond Peak- Graduation Climb

  • Start date: 05/16/2015

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 05/16/2015

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

Climb school graduates will meet in the LCC parking lot #4, closest to I-5, to carpool to the trail head. Please fuel up with a healthy breakfast to get off to a good start.
We will take the Pioneer Gulch route to the 8744 ft top of Diamond Peak, weather and good fortune permitting. We may begin the climb on a bare trail, but will soon be on snow. The route gradually gets steeper offering beautiful views of Diamond and the surrounding area. Climbers will need stiff-soled boots for kicking steps in the snow and an ice axe. We will have lunch near or on the summit, depending on conditions. Both leaders enjoy cookies. We will return the way we came. With any luck, we will have the chance for some fun glissading on the way down. Snow shoes & trekking poles are strongly suggested to avoid post holing in soft snow. My best guess is that we will be back at the cars around 6 PM and back at LCC around 8:00 PM.

Trip Report

Our upbeat group, of primarily climb school graduates, left from South Eugene High School parking lot at 6am. Despite drizzly, gray conditions, we donned our gortex and hit the trail a little after 8am. Route finding was easy, with no snow on the trail all the way to the junction where we left the trail. From there, the group headed east and up over thin layers of snow on rock mixed with sporadic patches of snow. A few members of the group elected to stay and practice travel on these steep and slippery conditions while the other members pushed for the summit.
It wasn't until we left treeline and gained the ridge that we began to travel on snow. We celebrated our decision not to pack skis or snowshoes! True, with such minimal visablity we did not take the most direct route to the false summit. None-the-less, we reached the actual summit around 1 PM, and enjoyed the glory of our lunches and each others' company since there were absolutely no views.
We managed to find enough snow for a few mini glissades on the way down and reached the cars around 5 pm. I felt truly lucky to lead such a positive, team-focused group of climb graduates. Special thanks to Laurie Monico and Brian Hamilton for their contributions to a great day.
