Description:

We will meet at South Eugene HS parking lot (east side of school) and carpool to the trailhead. We will be taking the SW approach (Pioneer Gulch) that involves a 4,000 ft climb over approximately four miles. We will initially be on trail, then bushwack to a SW ridge that we'll follow to the false summit, then a north traverse to the true summit. A full days work with beautiful views after we emerge from the tree line. Mosquitoes should be anticipated. You'll need stiff boots for the snow and an ice axe, as well as well supplied day pack and trekking poles. Snowshoes might be helpful. I plan to check out conditions a few days before we climb and will provide updated info on snow conditions.

Trip Report

We assembled at the Pioneer Gulch TH under a cloudy sky on a quiet Sunday for a 9 AM departure. The first mile and a half was uphill along the access trail to the Corrigan Lake/Summit Lake trail. At the junction we set off bushwhacking to the ridge to guide us to the false summit. At about 7,000 feet we emerged from the clouds into a beautiful sun/blue sky day. We were soon scrambling up rocks in our tee shirts. At the false summit we traversed the exposed knife edge of the ridge north to the true summit, arriving before 1:30 PM. We had a celebratory lunch and photo session on the summit, before the 4 mile descent to the TH. It was a beautiful day, though the diminished snow made the climb a little longer, and high clouds to the south hid some of the Cascade peaks usually visible from Diamond. A strong group consisting of Chris Melton, Trina Kanewa, Kerry Edinger, Todd Larsen (our pathfinder), Liz Hurkes, and Pete Frost provided many hours of plesant conversation as we climbed and descended Diamond Peak. A great group and fun day.
