Diamond Peak Wilderness

  • Start date: 08/12/2018

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 08/16/2018

Description:

5 days and 4 nights. We will circumambulate Diamond Peak clockwise, mostly avoiding the PCT. Entry via FS road 23, E of Oakridge, trail 3662 (Notch Lake) on the NW side of the wilderness.

Expect 10 miles the first day to a base camp SE of Yoran Lake for nights 1 and 2. About 6 miles to a second base camp south of Diamond Peak for nights 3 and 4. Finally, day 5 will be 10 miles back to our cars. This itinerary leaves days 2 and 4 open for choice day hikes.

The trip will involve several miles of off-trail map and compass travel, so you need to be comfortable with that. I have done parts of this hike, not all of it. The itinerary will be subject to change as conditions dictate.

Food and cooking are on your own. There will be multiple water sources (lakes), purification required.

Maybe the mosquitos will be gone.

Maybe the woods will not be on fire this summer. (Will cancel if smoke conditions are like 2017.)

Possible cool nights (6500 ft. elevation), late season wildflowers, and huckleberries.

August 12 is the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower and August 11 is the new moon, so viewing conditions could be excellent.

Trip Report

We modified this trip some due to various aches and pains, but did circle Diamond Peak. Starting at the Notch Lake trail we hiked to Yoran Lake for the first night; then backtracked and took the PCT to Mountain View Lake, Marie Lake on night three; and to Happy Lake for our final night. We had the lakes to ourselves three of the four nights. Saw few people except when on the PCT. Jumped in the water every day. Encountered few mosquitoes and occasional huckleberry patches. There were clear skies the first three nights followed by moderate smoke/haze the final night. The air quality was generally good; temperatures were comfortable for hiking and cool at night. Total mileage was about 35.
