Drift Creek Wilderness, North Trail

Description:

Important note: Due to the need to do social distancing, I would recommend people to travel separately. This is not environmentally friendly, but many of us are elderly and in the high risk category, and being in the same vehicle for 4 hours is not social distancing. Being on the trail is. If that is unacceptable, I can understand and apologize.

Drift Creek Wilderness is a 2 hour drive from Eugene, the last 16 miles on a FS road. The trail goes downhill 1400' to the Creek and then climbs back up. It may well be wet, and other than the beautiful creek and forest, there are no views. Also, I will be doing scouting for the annual logout by the Scorpions 2 weeks later. I may cut out some smaller blowdowns. It is in the wilderness, which makes it special. It is a moderate hike by all classifications. It climbs at the end, not the beginning, but it is not a long hike. Those who are interested in leading hikes, navigating, or dealing with wilderness trail scouting and clearing are more than welcome, since I will be discussing all of these, including trail memory, and time on trail recognition, two of what I think are important but under appreciated virtues in the woods.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, this is a lovely wilderness which many people aren't aware of. It's not big, and it has only three trails in it, and you will get a chance to hike one of them.

  • Event category: Trips

  • Area Type: Coastal

  • Departure Location: Eugene Target, W11th, parking lot closest to W11th

  • Rating: Moderate

  • Roundtrip total drive miles: 212

  • Season: 2020

  • Permits Required:

  • Event Status: Passed

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Despite the long term drought, it can still rain and mud also abounds. Rain gear is needed, and while there are no stream crossings, maybe gaiters, too. Gloves depends upon the temperature and a good hat should be brought. For me, it is a moderate pack for trip--no second pair of gloves, poles (it does go downhill a lot), hat, 1 liter of water (I leave some in the car), spare socks and shirt, second old rain jacket. Worst case scenario weather-wise is a much needed soaker, and I know I will get wet on the outside but not inside. I will have a GPS, Gaia, and Garmin mini plus map of the area.
