Description:

This hike is one of the premier wildflower destinations in the Cascades; they should be at their peak. Plus you will be participating on the Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail Exploration (E2C) - see May Bulletin for details. And it's the Solstice! The hike starts out through old growth forest and then opens up with views in the meadows. We will not hike all the way to the top (no view), but rather, stop in the last meadow for lunch.

Trip Report

What a fabulous day! The first official day of summer was sunny and bright. The wildflowers were abundant; we saw at least 30 varieties. Several of us had hiked the trail before and we agreed that the flowers were more prolific and lush than we ever remembered seeing before. It was a joy to hike with several participants who knew most of their names. On the return, I made a mistake and turned right across a bridge onto Winfrey Road in Westfir instead of the correct bridge to get to highway 58. What a treat; turns out that a volunteer has been beautifying the strip of land next to the creek and across the road from the houses with lots of flowers and decorative bicycles. Next time you're in the vicinity, check it out! Thanks Emily and Donna for driving and everyone for making this solstice special.
