Description:

UPDATE about departure place: Don't go to the Lodge-- meet at Amazon Park , 28th and Hilyard, to drive up 30th and Spring exit where we will park in the new development. This is an easy hike (3-4 miles) for guests, new (and old) members who want to find out about Obsidians and the Ribbon Trail. Celebrating Earth Day, this is one of four Ridgeline Trail hikes plus a Trail Maintenance project offered this week by Obsidians. We will check out the new housing development, changes to the Ribbon Trail, see the Obsidian Lodge, transplanting checkermallow progress and then hike Ribbon Trail to Hendricks Park. Trip Report

Out goal for our Earth Day walk was to take note and appreciate how Eugene Parks and Open Space has contributed to our outdoor experiences. We parked at the 30th and Spring Boulevard exit and then took the new housing development sidewalk that connects to Central and the Ribbon Trail. We stopped at the Lodge to see where where the new fence project would start a few hours later. We checked out the progress of checkermallow that the Eugene Parks staff helped us transplant a few years ago from the new development. Then it was on to Hendricks Park where we saw Kathy Hoeg and Sharon Duncan who told us the sad news that plants had been stolen from Rhododendron Gardens. It was sad for us to pick up litter! Other than that, we all felt so lucky to have such green spaces to enjoy. New members commented that they now had a clearer of how the trails connected. I gave everyone a reprint of the article, "Obsidians Connect with Spencer Butte and Ridgeline Trails: 1926-2017 " from the April 2017 Bulletin.
