Trip Report

Despite the forecast for a dreary & very wet day, six hardy hikers hit the wet & muddy trails at Elijah Bristow Sate Park in a light drizzle. After only 20 minutes on the Elk Trail the rain stopped and never returned! We enjoyed partly sunny skies the rest of the hike with temperatures pushing 60 degrees! We encountered a few problems due to high river water levels. The slough crossing on the Angler's trail was too deep to cross, so we had to backtrack until we found a safe crossing that was only about 8" deep. The pond below Dexter Dam was flooding across the trail, so this became our turn-around point. A beaver was spotted as we arrived, so we took a 30 minute rest there waiting for him to reappear, enjoying the serene setting and some waterfowl, and eating our snacks. The beaver didn't cooperate, so we headed back, with a detour on the Turtle Trail on the return hike where we encountered a black salamander (newt?).
