Elk Lake XC Ski and Snowshoe

Description:

Elk Lake Resort (www.elklakeresort.net) is 11 miles west of Mt Bachelor on Cascade Lakes Highway which is not plowed in the winter. Three snow vans will meet us at the Dutchman Flats Snow-park; they will transport our gear, food, and whatever distance participants want to ride. Some folks may want to ski all 11 miles; others may prefer to be dropped off at the 7 mile point (or wherever) and snow shoe/ski in 4 miles. Once there, we can ski/snowshoe around 7 mile Elk Lake or continue west on the road. We will stay in spacious, new cabins #22 and 26. Dinners and continental breakfasts prepared by participants are included. Lunches are not included. Cost: $210 for members; $215 for non-members. Cancellation: If you cancel before Feb 13, the fee less $20 will be refunded. Thereafter, no refund unless someone takes your place. Registration opens Saturday, January 19 for members; January 22 for non-members. Within 5 days of signing up, mail your check payable to Obsidians to Lana Lindstrom, PO Box 5506, Eugene, OR 97405. A pre-trip meeting will be scheduled at a later time. The departure places will be determined by the carpool participants.

Trip Report

It was a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious trip! Willamette Pass required chains, but Highway 126 was mostly bare pavement! Obsidians arrived at the Dutchman Flats snowpark on time to meet the snow vans which transported our gear and us at least part of the way to Elk Lake Resort. It had snowed about a foot the night before, so the conditions were perfect for skiing and snowshoeing - most of the group traveled about 5 miles on foot. The next day, almost everyone circumnavigated the 7 miles around Elk Lake and enjoyed stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Six of us also did a side trip to Hosmer Lake. Others saw beautiful sunsets and sunrises over Elk Lake and explored the area around the resort. The dinners were delicious, especially the desserts and the Brussel sprout salad! On the way out, five participants either skied or walked to Devil's Lake where we were picked up by the vans. Most of the group stopped at the Meissner Snowpark on the way home and enjoyed the groomed trails. Thanks to the very convivial participants who made this an exceptional trip. Extra special thanks to the drivers, the 4 women who volunteered to share 2 king beds, and the adaptable occupants of the house which had very limited hot water.
